I never thought I would be an entrepreneur. It’s typical for someone who gets a public relations degree to identify as a “people person”, so I had this belief that going out on my own would be too lonely.
After a decade of communications work in government, oil and gas, and agency, I was faced with a moral dilemma. It was a defining moment in my life.
I had barely returned to work from my second maternity leave and had a three-year-old and one-year-old. We had moved out of the city I worked in, so getting to the office now meant a longer commute and earlier mornings to try and avoid rush hour traffic. We hauled the kids out of bed at 6 a.m. to be at work by 7. The days were long, not getting back to the kids until 5:30, which meant they immediately needed dinner and essentially went straight to bed.
All the coffee in the world couldn’t curb my exhaustion. I thought I just wasn’t adapting to being back at work. That was a lie.
Meanwhile, My mum, who I loved deeply, was battling breast cancer and it took a turn for the worse.
So I made a decision.
I would leave my job to spend more time with her. She passed away eight days later.
It was very emotional. I hadn’t lost anyone close before, and it truly rocked my world. But, it also gave me perspective.
I learned that life really is short. So why spend it doing something that doesn’t bring you joy?
Since we spend nearly ⅓ of our lives working, this meant re-evaluating my career choices.
I decided to start my own business.
I believe that everyone deserves a life filled with passion. And I find entrepreneurs to be some of the most passionate people out there.
Given my background in marketing and public relations, I felt well-positioned to offer advice to small business owners so they could increase their awareness, build a strong reputation and better reach their ideal clients or customers.
I’ve worked with such a variety of businesses; from a coworking space to photographers, financial planners to online course creators. I also work with our local Tourism Association and led them through a process to develop an award-winning destination brand.
The common denominator with all of my clients is they are passionate. It doesn’t matter what you do – when you love it, I get fired up!
The world needs more of that energy, and I’m here to help amplify it.
